Novato, CA Periodontal Dentist Explains Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Written by Dr. McConnell on Sep 17, 2012

Periodontal disease is a serious oral health issue that can also lead to other health problems. We now know gum disease and pool oral health can lead to overall health issues such as heart disease and diabetes. We often see patients at our Novato, CA Periodontal Treatment office who show symptoms of gum disease such as bleeding when brushing or flossing, swollen or tender gums, bad breath, etc., but don’t realize that these are symptoms of periodontal disease.

Many patients who do recognize these problems as symptoms of gum disease may put off treatments because they’ve had painful experiences with surgical gum procedures in the past. You’ll be relieved to know that you no longer have to fear treatment for periodontal disease. Non-surgical periodontal treatment makes invasive cutting of the gums a thing of the past.

What can I expect if I need Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment?

First and foremost, you need to have the proper diagnosis. The key to successful treatment is catching the signs as early as possible. Most patients do not realize they have gum disease. After a thorough evaluation of your mouth, and it is determined you have periodontal disease which requires treatment, the appointments will design a treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals. Our goal is to not only treat your gum disease, but teach you to care for your mouth long term.

When you arrive for treatment, we’ll first numb the area with a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. Our typical treatment protocol utilizes the most current scientific and empirical research about treatment. We use microsonic instrumentation to remove the causative agents, antibacterial rinses, fine hand instrument, gum disease specific lasers, and site specific antibiotics. You will experience so little discomfort that you’ll probably be able to carry on with the rest of your day as usual. We treat an area of the mouth at a time, usually over four visits, and a final treatment six weeks later to evaluate success.

Where can I obtain Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment?

We are pleased to offer this non-surgical periodontal treatment right here in our Marin County Periodontal office. We will schedule a complimentary consultation in order to explain how the laser works and to give you a demonstration. After that we take X-rays so we can make an accurate diagnosis of the extent of the infection.

It is extremely important to note that Periodontal Disease can progress without any symptoms. Regular examinations and cleanings can identify potential problems before they become costly and difficult to treat.
