Our Novato Dentist Discusses Dental Surgeries, & When They’re Necessary

Written by Dr. McConnell on May 17, 2022

While the prospect of dental surgery may sound intimidating at first, our Novato dentists are here to help you understand how this type of treatment can be useful and even transformative in the right circumstances. Keep reading to learn more…

Dental Damage

Dental infections—like periodontal disease and cavities—can continue to infect vulnerable tissues and cause damage until they are treated. If portions of your smile are damaged beyond repair, our team will remove the affected tissues before beginning restorative treatment. In some cases, even portions of a patient’s jawbone need to be removed in order to restore the patient’s smile to health.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Another common reason for undergoing oral surgery is to remove problematic wisdom teeth. In certain cases, we are able to simply pull wisdom teeth, like we would pull any other tooth. More commonly, however, a wisdom tooth gets stuck in the patient’s jawbone—this is called an impacted tooth. In these cases surgery is necessary to extract the tooth.

Oral Cancers

If you are diagnosed with a type of oral cancer, you will likely need surgery in order to remove the cancerous tissue. Tumors can develop in many places on the maxillofacial structure, including on the tongue, in the jawbone, on the hard palate, near the sinuses, and on the gum tissue. Tumor removal is the first step in treating cancer and achieving remission.
