Our Novato Dentist Helps You Manage A Dental Emergency

When dental problems pop up unexpectedly, you want to have a plan in place to help you get back on track. That is why our Novato emergency dentists are here! Today, we’re giving you some tips on how to handle unexpected dental problems. We hope that this information helps you feel empowered and prepared when dental issues arise.

The first thing that you want to do is to determine exactly whom you’ll call when faced with dental issues. Talk to your dentist about whether they offer emergency care; is there a special number that you need to call for same-day care? If your dentist does not provide emergency care, they may have recommendations on dentists that do; dentists like Dr. McConnell!

The next thing to keep in mind is that you want to try to preserve and maintain as much of your natural tooth structure and oral tissue as possible. If, for example, your tooth is knocked out, do not rinse the tooth with water, as you risk removing gum tissues and nerves. In fact, the best course of action is to gently reinsert your tooth into the gum tissue until you can get to your dentist’s office. If it is not possible, or uncomfortable to reinsert the tooth, you can place it in a glass of milk in the interim.

You also want to be careful not to apply numbing or pain management medications directly to your damaged oral tissues; doing so can actually cause additional oral health problems. It is better to numb the area using cold compresses on the outside of your cheek.

As you would imagine, the sooner you’re able to begin treatment for dental trauma, the better your dental prognosis. So, don’t hesitate to call our Novato emergency dentist for additional help and guidance!
